In the Outdoor section of the Anchorage Daily News this Sunday there was a short tidbit introducing a new report published on ORV use in Alaska in National Parks.  The report is geared towards ATV as opposed to off-highway vehicles, but it is still information fourwheelers in Alaska should be following.

2-16-03 Park Service releases vehicle use report  The National Park Service has released a report on the effect of off-road vehicle use in Alaska's national parks.  Federal law and regulations generally prohibit off-road vehicle use in national parks, but use in Alaska is sometimes allowed under provisions of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act.  The report describes how and where off-road vehicles are used in national parks and proposes several actions.  The report followed increasing observations by park staffers that off-road vehicle use is growing and some trails are deteriorating.  Off-road vehicle use was reported in 13 of the 16 national park units in Alaska, and the Park Service believes use is increasing.  The impacts are not thoroughly documented, but staffers considered some areas severely degraded.  A copy is available on the web at www.nps.gov/akso/orv/orv.pdf

Last Thursday we gathered for our first club meeting of the year, and had a strong turnout.  The meeting was a bit tedious with all the nominations and elections, so I thank everyone for their patience (and votes!).  Meeting minutes will be posted soon.
