State of Alaska sues Feds over access rights

Governor Murkowski's staff as made an attempt to assert state's right to a number of disputed RS2477 rights or way which travel over federal land.  The State is taking the Federal government to court on the issue.  This is a very positive step for the State government to take in regard to public access over federally held public lands.  For the whole story please read Murkowski asserts rights to trails.

Lots of News

There are a number of things currently happening, both events and trail projects in the near future and news about land access.  I have included them in this update, in no particular order.

From the Alaska ATV Club:

Spring 2005 Jim Creek Cleanup
May 21, 2005 - from 10AM until 3PM. Help us clean up the most used OHV area in the state.  We supply the bags and hauling, you bring your gloves and favorite way to get around the area! Everyone who collects a bag of trash will be entered for the Door Prizes supplied by the local OHV dealers!  Door prize drawings and BBQ start at 3pm!

Sponsored by the Alaska ATV Club with support from the Mat-Su Borough
www.alaskaatvclub.org or 222-7676

The Mat-Su Borough is in need of volunteer labor for trail improvements on the Plumley-Maud Trail.  In 2004 the Borough was awarded $20k in Recreational Trails Grant money for trail enhancements on the trail.  The Plumley-Maud Trail is an ATV trail in the Butte area that connects Plumley Road and Maud Road.  The trail will remain limited to ATVs after the enhancements which include installation of geo-block, geo-web, and other trail hardening techniques.  They will be working on the trail with volunteer labor every weekend starting April 23 and ending June 5.  If you would like to get involved please contact Bruce Paulsen or Warren Templin with the Mat-Su Borough to find when and how you can help.  This will be a good opportunity to give back to the local community and learn about the installation and use of trail hardening techniques.

On March 23, 2005 an article posted on KTUU.com about opening areas off of the "Haul Road" to motorized use.  Please see Bill would open Dalton Highway to Off-road Activities for the complete story.

Meeting Minutes

On March 3 we had another club meeting.  Unfortunately I was not able to attend so I cannot provide any comments.  A number of topics were discussed including club dues and membership eligibility.

It was brought to my attention recently that the meeting minutes had not been updated on the webpage for awhile. I realized that I had received at least one copy of the previous meeting minutes but didn't not get them on the webpage.  So I am also adding the minutes from our January 6 meeting.  My apologizes for the late updated.
