Rear Long Arm

Custom made rear link suspension for a ZJ

Written by Brentt Blair, pictures by Brentt Blair

Here are some pictures of my rear long arms. It was long difficult process that has turned out great so far. I am happy to have the extra axle movement and the ability to get rid of that stupid Trackbar in the rear. So without further adieu here are some pictures.

Here is a picture of the subframes that I made to sleeve the Unibody Rails. It is 4x6 .250 tubing cut in half to make 4x3 Channel. The brackets look sort of crooked in this picture but that is just my crappy digital camera. All brackets are made from .250 plate.

The other side.

Here is a side shot. Notice the notch I cut out to deal with the pinch seam of the unirail.

NOW onto the Long Arms. I forgot to take pictures during the install but I will try and explain anyway.

Here is a side profile of the entire thing. That is a 33 inch tire and if you know anything about the ZJ suspension you will notice how far I moved the rear axle back.

Here you can tell how far I had to move the spring post back. A good 3 inches or so.

Full view of the rear. Notice that there are not control arms hanging low below the tubes. The shocks still do but not nearly as much as they used to.

There is my MONDO BEEF diff cover. You can also see the triangulation Hoop over the diff.

Another view of the Hoop and how it is tied into the Diff cover. That Diff cover is 3/4 inch steel.

Here is a picture of the hoop and upper Y arm and how it attaches.

Here is a picture of the long lower control arm mounted to the subframe.

Well there you have it. If you have any questions or would like a specific picture or explanation of anything that I have done to my pile please feel free to write me an email at bamblair@gci.net
