I made this snorkel/fresh air intake because there is a lot of water crossings up here in Alaska. I like being able to remove the up pipe and having the nice fresh air intake for normal day to day driving. I know that the look is not for everyone and might even be considered ghetto by most, but it works for me and I like all the questions and comments I receive about it. It is called the Potato Gun by my club mates, I just laugh. I do not get any rain or snow or water into the hole on a daily basis, but a lot of people ask me that question so I thought I would answer it here as well.I used the basic black plastic PVC pipe. It is 3 inch pip and works perfectly. I used a rubber couple to squeeze past the radiator. The rubber is standing up just fine to the heat. Total cost of the setup is around 25 bucks.
Here it is in All it Glory! I can also run a flexible hose to the roof if need be.
Here is a picture of how the 3 inch pipe fits into the stock filter box. Absolutely NO modifications were made to the filter box. This is great for emissions since that is were the inspection starts. Anything before it is not inspected (at least in my state). Use a little silicone to seal it up tight and you are done with that.
Here is a picture of the rubber coupler that passes the radiator. If you still have AC it will be really tight but I think you can do it. I did have to use a dremmel to shave down the edge of the PVC (all the white looking marks) This was easy and took all of five minutes. The fit is VERY tight and does not require any further bracing so far.
Here is a close up of the hole, pretty straight shot to the filter box huh?
